The debates took an interesting turn today with topics being introduced as a new concept to the parties. The first debate that took place was between Indian Youth Democratic Front and Reformist People’s Party and the topic that it was based on was impact of climate change in India and what should be the appropriate response to it by the Government. IYDF in its opening statement mentioned that it would implement necessary policies with regard to the matter at hand and assured the voters that important steps will be taken. A point of information was raised by RPP right after their opening statement and it highlighted how IYDF has mentioned a government institution in their manifesto which is absolutely not allowed.
This was followed by the opening statement of RPP which completely focused on turning the environment green and initiatives which will be taken to achieve this goal. They mentioned specific steps which they will be taking so that they can come through with their promises. They also mentioned how they will be providing a structural policy with an implementation change in consideration with climatic innovation. A point of interest was raised by IYDF questioning RPP if they have mentioned these environmental policies anywhere in their manifestos to which RPP replied “Yes we have because the environment affects each and every person in the economy”.
After this were the main arguments from both the parties. This round started with IYDF mentioning how they are planning on implementing the Kyoto protocol and the Paris agreement in India. Although in reality both of these have been implemented by the Indian government quite a while back. This showed lack of knowledge about political treaties on IYDF’s part very clearly. Whereas RPP started their main argument with emphasizing on the importance of green energy transition and local emission goals. They also talked about raising awareness about these topics in an international sphere as well.
The closing statements of both the parties focused on their respective policies and how they would go on implementing them. The closing statement was followed by the Election Commission's question on how Coastal cities are at a huge threat so what infrastructural measures would be taken to avoid the cities becoming underwater by 2050? To which IYDF replied that they would recognize the coastal cities underwater in accordance with natural calamities and that awareness needs to be spread. Whereas RPP proposed finding alternatives and lithium charged batteries and also how citizens need to be self reliant.
